As a kid, his job was chopping firewood in Washington winters so his family wouldn't freeze. As an adult, he designed the communication system that carries NASA astronauts to space. Jacob was the oldest of 11 kids. His dad was a Baptist preacher, then a construction worker. They were poor. He was homeschooled with almost no structure. Growing up, no one was assigning him anything. No one was checking his homework. His parents didn't expect him to go to college. But Jacob had a spark. At 10, his grandfather gave him a Morse code set. He became obsessed with radios. He decided he wanted to understand how radios actually worked. That meant engineering. Engineering meant college. College meant math. But at 18, he didn't know algebra. So he taught himself, while working a full-time job, grinding through a math curriculum called Saxon. Six months later: Calculus 1. He went to community college, then Pasadena City, audited RF classes at Caltech, and transferred to UCLA. In 2011, SpaceX came calling. Initially, he didn't want an interview. He just wanted to tour the factory. But as he walked the factory floor, saw rockets being built by hand, he couldn't walk away. He got the job. And designed the entire Crew Dragon comms architecture from a clean sheet. Today he's a YC-backed founder building Cascade Space: antenna arrays for lunar and deep space missions. From hauling firewood in a wheelbarrow to building infrastructure for the deep space economy. The size of your start in no way determines the scale of your finish.
